Synopsis or Teaser

South Florida, the near future. Climate change has left many coastal cities, including Miami, flooded and nearly uninhabitable. There are tent cities clustered on the tops of buildings, yachts gathered covered-wagon style with armed gunman patrolling the decks and pointing their weapons at passing helicopters.

Rising sea levels have led to ocean acidification, and ocean acidification means not enough seafood. The domino effect of the dying oceans has led to a planetary level of starvation.

The Last Seed Co. makes a desperate attempt to save humanity by collecting "seed water" from Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. Europa's waters have hardy microbes that could flourish in Earth's waters and enable life on Earth to continue.

But political instability means there are only enough funds for one small ship, just big enough for one person to stay alive for the eight-year mission. The astronaut who goes on the mission has to start out as a child; the only child with the right genetic profile is 14-year-old Vivien.

Vivian will have some company in the journey into space – sort of. Scientist Jeanne Dorfman has developed a technique to imprint the knowledge of three adult astronauts—Paulsen the pilot, Vivien’s father the biologist, and Craig the engineer—onto the mind of a child. Dorfman secretly imprint herself onto Vivien's mind as well.

Once out in space Vivien does her best to adapt to living with the imprints. She feels haunted, and wakes up covered with cuts and bruises. Dorfman's imprint, stowed away in the recesses of Vivien's mind, has a glitch and is now psychotic.

With the help of the imprints of her father and Craig the engineer, Vivien wrestles control away from the psycho-Dorfman imprint just long enough to complete the mission.

Vivien makes it home, the mission partially accomplished, only to find that real Dorfman sells the Imprinting technology as a guarantee of immortality. Dorfman is also imprinting herself on every client, so that one day she will control the world. Vivien, her father, and Craig are determined to stop her at any cost.

Bio

ALISON MCMAHAN owns the rights to the short story, “Rub-a-Dub” by Daniel Galouye that inspired this screenplay (Galouye’s novel Simulacron 3 became the film The 13th Floor). McMahan is an award-winning screenwriter and author and an independent filmmaker. Her most recent documentary, Bare Hands and Wooden Limbs, narrated by Sam Waterston, is distributed by Shami Media.

Inspired by the true story of the letters Kafka wrote from a doll to a little girl. Based on the poem The Wanderer King by Theodore Deppe.

Synopsis

Berlin. 1988. The wall is still up.

Tom, An American writer, a one-shot wonder who can’t match his previous success, lives in Berlin while his wife Rachel finishes her thesis on Kafka.

For their tenth wedding anniversary he buys her a doll from 1924.

Although they don’t realize it, Kafka’s soul is imprisoned in the doll. Tom writes about the fall of the Wall in Kafka’s voice, and again becomes successful. But Rachel knows that Tom has changed, and the change has something to do with the doll.

At the same time, a series of child-killings occur in their vicinity. All evidence points to Tom as the killer.

Tom is arrested but becomes so ill he has to be hospitalized. His illness baffles his doctors. Throughout, Tom clings to the doll.

When Rachel tries to take the doll away, Tom nearly kills her.

It’s up to Rachel now to solve the mystery of the doll, the killings, and Tom’s illness before it is too late.

Bios

ALISON MCMAHAN owns the rights to the poem, “The Wanderer King” by Theodore Deppe that inspired this screenplay. McMahan is an optioned and award-winning screenwriter and an independent filmmaker.

THEODORE DEPPE was born in Duluth, Minnesota, grew up in Indiana, and presently lives on the west coast of Ireland. He is the author of Children of the Air (Alice James Books, 1990), The Wanderer King (Alice James, 1996), Cape Clear: New and Selected Poems (Salmon Books, 2002), and Orpheus on the Red Line (Tupelo, 2009). His work has been recognized by a Pushcart Prize, two NEA grants, and fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Commission and the Connecticut Council on the Arts. He has been writer in residence at the James Merrill House in Stonington, CT (1998-99), the Poets’ House in Donegal, Ireland (2001-2003), and Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts (2003-2006), and he shared the writer in residence position at Westminster College with Annie Deppe (spring semester, 2012). He has taught in graduate programs in writing in Ireland, England, and the U.S. He currently teaches in the Stonecoast MFA program in Maine and directs Stonecoast in Ireland, an option that allows graduate students to study in Ireland. Deppe received a B.A. in English from Earlham College, a B.S.N. in Nursing from Berea College, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Vermont College. His work has been published widely on both sides of the Atlantic, including Poetry Ireland Review, Poetry, The Shop, Kenyon Review, Ploughshares, Irish Pages, New England Review, The Stinging Fly, Massachusetts Review, Agni, Boulevard, and Southern Review.

Puerto Rico, 1917. Fernando, a poor Carib, invents a new white rum. He and the woman he loves are blocked from selling it by their new US Citizenship, Prohibition, and her brother, the island's biggest distiller.

Puerto Rico, 1917.

Puerto Rico. She left a Spanish colony and came home to an American territory.

Juliana Roldan, a Puerto Rican debutante, returns from finishing school in Madrid. Her brother Jose, Puerto Rico's biggest rum distiller, wants her to marry one of his cronies, but Juliana only has eyes for Fernando, the son of one of their Carib servants. While her brother fights Prohibition, she helps Fernando start his white rum business.

Puerto Rico. Spanish or American, doesn't matter; what matters is the land.

Fernando must lift his extended family out of poverty. His mother devises a formula for something new: white rum! Now he just has to brew it, sell it, evade the US Army recruiters, and try to ignore the way his heart pounds every time he sees Juliana Roldan. Because even in this brave new Puerto Rico, white rum and dark rum don't mix.

Brianna McKinley hates working at the clinic but loves dating the suave Jack Toland. Jack arrives for tonight’s date completely broke. Brianna makes the dumbest mistake of her life when she agrees to be smuggled into a concert in the trunk of the car.

In just a few minutes the car is hit and Brianna is knocked out. She wakes up hours later, injured, dehydrated, alone. She cries out for help. No answer.

Then there are voices. Corporate security agents Henny and Lon search the car. Brianna thinks she is saved.

But they don’t take her from the trunk. Henny starts an interrogation. Where is your boyfriend? And what has he done with our computer chip?

Brianna’s boyfriend has secrets. Jack isn’t a college student; he’s a corporate spy who just double-crossed his employers.

Her torturers strip-search her, give her truth serums and laxatives, deny her food and water. Through it all Brianna manages to keep the chip safe and fights back, buying herself time to figure out what Jack was up to and with whom. Enraged, her enemies fill the trunk of the car with smoke, and when Brianna still resists, with scorpions.

Her enemies make one serious mistake: they let her keep her handbag. Brianna turns a perfume sprayer and a lighter into an eye-scorching flame thrower.

To escape Brianna has to figure out what Jack was up to and with whom, study her captors’ weak points and then pit her interrogators against each other. A tall order for a girl who turned twenty-one while locked in the trunk of a car left abandoned in a junkyard in the desert.

Turns out Jack isn’t dead, but kidnapped, but he manages to escape and get Brianna out.

But once Jack has the chip he pushes her back into the trunk and the car into the crusher.

Synopsis or Teaser

Kelly Thrones is a serial murderer; she just doesn’t know it yet.

She has killed six people by the time the FBI arrests her. They have her prints, DNA, and video proof of her leaving the latest murder scene. But Kelly has no motive and no memory of the killings.

While in lock-up, Kelly kills an inmate. Now Kelly knows she is possessed.

FBI Agent Powers discovers that each of Kelly’s victim was a serial killer.

He no longer wants to prosecute her, he wants to hire her.

But Kelly wants to be free of this entity. She communicates with the rogue angel and using all of her sales skills she strikes the deal of her life and convinces the angel to leave.

Agent Powers also offers Kelly deal: her freedom if she will help bring down Dillon Crompton, an arsonist who has been setting bigger and bigger fires.Kelly agrees and heads into the Blue Jay Nuclear Power plant to stop a killer.

But without her rogue Angel, will she come out of it alive?
